Holden observatory was donated to Syracuse University by Erastus Holden in memory of his son who had died while a student. The dedication of the Charles Demarest Holden Observatory took place on November 18, 1887. It has a fine 8 inch Alvin Clark telescope, a three inch reversible transit, a clock for rotating the telescope, and assorted other instruments. At times the observatory was opened to the public for observing the moon, planets, and stars. In recent years, it was used for administrative office space and the telescope itself was not in use.
